Hellenic Parliament Greek Genocide Recognition: 2645/1998

In 1998, Greece's Parliament passed Law Number 2645/1998 which officially recognized the genocide of the Greeks throughout Asia Minor. Below is an English translation of the announcement, as well as the original wording of the Law which was published in the Newspaper of the Hellenic Parliament.

LAW NUMBER 2645
The establishment of September 14 as a day of national remembrance for the genocide of the Greeks of Asia Minor by the Turkish State.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE HELLENIC REPUBLIC
We issue the following law which was voted for by the Parliament:

Article 1
We designate September 14 every year as a day of national remembrance for the genocide of the Greeks of Asia Minor by the Turkish State.

Article 2
The characteristics, the content, the sponsor and the method in organizing these national remembrance events will be determined by a Presidential Decree, which will be issued following a proposal by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, following the opinion of the Federation of Refugee Associations of Greece.

Article 3
The power of this law will begin with its publishing in the Newspaper of the Parliament.
We order its publishing in the Newspaper of the Parliament and its enactment as a law of the Nation.
