Dear American Hellenic Institute (AHI),

I am writing to express my confusion at your approach to the Greek Genocide. I have read the 2016 AHI Policy Statement and find it disconcerting that you refer to the Greek Genocide using a myriad of titles.

In your policy statement, you refer to the genocide of Greeks using the following titles: Greek Pontian Genocide, Pontian Greek Genocide, Greek Genocide, Anatolian Greek Genocide and Pontian Genocide. However when referring to the genocide of Armenians and Assyrians, you refer to their plight simply using one clear and concise title; Armenian Genocide and Assyrian Genocide, respectively.

Therefore I ask; why do you find it necessary to use five titles when describing the genocide of Greeks, but you refer to the genocide of Armenians and Assyrians using one clear and concise title? Were Greeks subjected to five different genocides?

You will find that the genocide of Greeks was one genocide and it should be referred to as such. The Ottoman and Kemalist authorities did not differentiate between the Greeks of Pontus or the Greeks of Eastern Thrace or the Greeks of the remainder of Asia Minor when they were implementing their genocidal policies. Their program of extermination was not regionally confined.

I therefore ask the American Hellenic Institute refer to the genocide of Greeks using one simple and concise title to avoid confusion and to respect the historiography of the genocide. Since the victims were all Greeks, please refer to it as a Greek Genocide. Using confusing terminology does the cause of awareness and recognition no good whatsoever.

Sincerely yours,
